In 2004, the Automatic Spring Drive watch was created, a revolutionary innovation in a new automatic watch with an accuracy of one second per day. It is a main spring powered watch movement with an escapementless regulator, combining the beauty of a mechanical watch and the precision of electronic timekeeping. 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the 9R spring-loaded automatic movement.
Spring Drive watches mark the gentle passage of time with their absence of ticking, designed to imitate the natural progression from one moment to the next.
The theme “The Nature of Time” features prominently in Grand Seiko watch designs, a Japanese spirituality where each moment is a unique expression revealed through light and shadow. Watchmakers’ pride in their environment is represented from designing watch movements to creating dials reflecting the beauty of Japanese nature.
The textured dial of this model mimics the iconic Grand Seiko “Snowflake” watch. In cool, dry air, and when blown by the wind down the slopes, this snow has a special quality of lightness and delicacy that is captured in the subtly textured surface of the dial. The color of the model is inspired by the rosy winter morning glow of sunrise over the peaks of the Hotaka Mountains near the Shinshu Watch Studio in Japan, the birthplace of Spring Drive. The gradient of the dial represents the changing landscape at different times of the day.
Constructed in a lightweight, high-intensity titanium case, the snowflake pink dial is accompanied by a double-curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. It features razor-sharp silver second, minute and hour hands, as well as a colorful power reserve hand and the GS logo, which represents the morning sun.
Powered by an in-house 9R65 Spring Drive movement, visible through the glass case back, accurate to +/- 1 second per day (+/-15 seconds per month) with a 72-hour power reserve. The Spring Drive movement allows for almost fluid gliding of the seconds hand, while maintaining a high level of precision.
Each Grand Seiko model meets high standards of precision, durability and readability, handcrafted in Japan by Takumi artisans.
